SCADOXUS

Scadoxus membranaceus -
This small evergreen Clivia and Amaryllis relative has something for everyone. It makes a great evergreen foliage plant in the house or garden in zones 10 and higher. In the late winter to early spring, a small flower scape is produced and is quite interesting to look at for several weeks. They are very self fertile and the bright orange berries quickly follow. New leaves are pushed out every year. Sometimes the old foliage will stay on and sometimes it will fade. Either way, it rarely looks naked.

Scadoxus puniceus 'Magnifica' -
These are very unusual bulbs. The flowers emerge from the ground before the foliage appears. They are a cluster of orange red filaments surrounded by a deep burgundy bronze sheath that lasts until the seeds are ripe. As the flowers fade and seeds begin to form, the large leaf stems that resemble corn on steroids emerges and continues to grow to 5’ tall. Best shipped when winter dormant but it can be shipped in the green all year long.
